Broader whistleblower laws come into effect on 1 July 2019.
Exactly how these laws will affect corporate life remains to be seen. But the changes are clearly designed to improve standards of corporate and government behaviour by making it easier for employees to call out their legitimate concerns publicly. The changes highlight the need for larger companies and government departments to have strong whistleblower protections in place. They advantage employers who have a culture that encourages team members to raise concerns openly and who ensure that those concerns are then looked into – and responded to appropriately. Most leading law firms have issued useful guidance on the changes.
